Martin Jacques spoke at the Town Hall of Cleveland public lecture series two weeks ago on Monday night on “When China Rules the World.” With our love for the Chinese, Nick and I couldn’t pass up this opportunity.
Mr. Jacques did not disappoint. Jacques challenged us to think about one important question: What’s China’s influence going to be like culturally, militarily, intellectually, ethically, etc.? As China begins to take center stage, the face of modernity will shift and no longer be set on Western ideals. Jacques also highlighted how the influence of the Global North, whose GDP is 33% of the world’s economy, is dwindling, and the influence of the Global South, whose GDP is 67% of the world’s economy, is rising. The Global South is home to over 85% of the world’s population.
I will end with one of the other questions Jacques posed to the audience: What will it look like to have Chinese food, language, fashion and pop culture as part of our every day lives?
